How do we link to an arXiv paper that uses the old format? The entry form to claim papers asks for the new format (YYMM.NNNNN) and doesn’t accept code from older entries (subject/YYMMNNN):

An arXiv identifier is a unique alphanumeric code assigned to each submission on the arXiv preprint repository, facilitating precise referencing and retrieval of scholarly articles. The identifier’s format has evolved over time:

  1. Before April 2007: Identifiers included a subject classification and a sequence number, formatted as archive/YYMMNNN. For example, hep-th/9901001 refers to a paper in the High Energy Physics - Theory archive, submitted in January 1999.

  2. April 2007 to December 2014: A new scheme was introduced, omitting the subject classification and adopting the format YYMM.NNNN, where YY denotes the year, MM the month, and NNNN a zero-padded sequence number. For instance, 0704.0001 corresponds to the first submission in April 2007.

  3. January 2015 onwards: To accommodate increasing submission volumes, the sequence number expanded to five digits, resulting in the format YYMM.NNNNN. For example, 1501.00001 indicates the first submission in January 2015.

Each identifier can also include a version suffix (e.g., v1, v2) to denote revisions, such as 1501.00001v2 for the second version of the paper.

In February 2022, arXiv began assigning Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to new submissions, enhancing discoverability and interoperability across platforms. The DOI is constructed by appending the arXiv ID (with the colon replaced by a period) to the prefix 10.48550/, forming a link like https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2202.01037.
